Making Stories Together
Our last visit together included a collaborative story creation activity on Zoom. I did my best to keep up with the children’s many ideas and suggestions for characters and actions. We wondered what made a story good and memorable. We also explored ways to make our stories better (whatever that could mean!). But most of all, we just had fun letting our imaginations go wild as the many story ideas ran around playing hide-and -seek and tag in the playground of the pictures that resulted. Occasionally we needed a quiet moment and space was allowed to have quiet in our stories. It was a fun way to end a very special school year.

GREEN CLASSROOM’S STORY:
It was beautiful in the Scarecrow’s city. The sun was shining and there was a mixed up rainbow in the sky, its colors were out of order but it didn’t care. It didn’t care because there was another rainbow which had black and white zebra stripes. It was zebra rainbow. The scarecrow was tending to her apple tree and picking apples. Green rolling hills extended far beyond the city. A pink rainbow unicorn played with a brown horse. They ate grass and ran and played and had a good time. Really far away under the mixed up rainbow lived a red dragon who stood on top of the tallest rocky brown mountain you can imagine! He parked his helicopter on another nearby mountain peak. Then the trouble started: Four hungry green dragons riding in a scary black truck came to eat everyone! There were lots of tools nearby and they built a special strong wall that stopped the hungry dragons. The brown horse gave them a juicy red apple and the red dragon’s helicopter flew to the top of a yellow dandelion. A bright green caterpillar emerged fro the helicopter and made sure that the green dragons had enough apples and wouldn’t hurt anyone.

BLUE CLASSROOM’S STORY:
Katie’s electric guitar was sad and mad because it only played blue music. So it went up into the sky and hid behind the sun. Everyone was concerned and wondered what they could do to help Katie’s guitar. The white and brown rabbits wondered if a bite of luscious green grass could help. The saber-toothed squirrel and the oak tree thought that Katie’s guitar would appreciate the acorns they wanted to share with her. The wise and colorful heart-shaped balloons had the best idea: they just went and got Katie’s guitar and floated playfully through the sky as a rainbow appeared. The rainbow made colorful rainbow rain and there were puddles were everywhere. The valentine balloons made C-shaped half-hearts. It was getting late and Father Rabbit told everyone it was time to go to bed.

PURPLE CLASSROOM’S STORY:
Everyone is getting ready for a surprise party! The queen rabbit is in her house waiting for the party decorations and guests to arrive. She’s hung up a festive spinning silver disco ball. An arriving large gray emergency cargo plane is filled with party balloons (not too many, not too few, just enough!). Even a special flying green tow truck has harnessed the moon and is bringing ii to the party. The moon is excited and has put a red bow. Stars glitter and a trio of playful comets think they might enjoy the party also. Two people and a black dragon dance on the roof. They’re really getting into the music! A red pterodactyl strides up to the front door eager to join his friends at the surprise gala. There’s is only one more character who is busy getting ready for the party and she doesn’t know that she is the guest of honor! Brown horse has put on lots of colorful jewelry and bright neon green cowboy boots. She even has three blue bows tied in her long black tail. She loves to eat grass though and decides to have a snack before going out. Realizing that Brown Horse is late, the Queen Rabbit rides on her back and brings her to the party which is in full swing.

FRENCH CLASSROOM’S STORY:
There were many animals all ready to be in this story so a jungle with lots of trees seemed to be the best place for it to happen. There were trees, ferns and long looping vines. Everything was lush and green. A sleepy giraffe lived on the edge of the jungle and didn’t want to play with anyone, not even her friend the elephant. He made lots of noise with his trunk but she kept sleeping. The other animals were too busy to help. A blue dragon/pterodactyl read a red book high in the trees. He sat on a comfortable pink pillow. The crocodile had eaten too much food and moaned and groaned while resting on top of a palm tree. A mysterious and malevolent brown bull (le taureau) was determined to push the elephant to get him to stop making so much noise. There was a girl and she knew what to do: using her handy paper punch, she punched circular holes in the palm leaves. The punched circle fell down and got stuck on the elephants wrinkly purple skin which finally got his attention and he stopped making so much noise! The End.

MANDARIN CLASSROOM’S STORY:
Elsa’s mother is on her way to the Zoo to finally meet a moose she has been writing letters to. She’s never met a moose in person and really knows very little about moose. She likes him though and wants to be his friend aso she has brought a basket filled with bananas and carrots that she thinks he will like. Other animals don’t think this is a good idea and the suggest other food choices: with the help of a panda bear the raccoon offers a pine cone (while declining to offer nice tasty bamboo leaves!). The owl who perches on top of the zoo fence can see that Elsa’s mom is determined to give her new friend food he doesn’t like. This could be an embarrassing moment for all! The zoo is about to close for the day and a snowman has balloons to give away. One by one, the balloons make the woman’s dress as colorful as a rainbow which delights everyone. The moral of this story is to embrace the unexpected.
The End.

RED CLASSROOM’S STORY:
There is a house and a forest. We are not sure who lives in the house. Two bears, wearing jackets are walking in the forest to the house. A woman is inside the house reading a book to a pointy person (or her child). A mischievous monkey takes the bears’ hats so they go into the house and the woman reads stories to all of them.

ORANGE ROOM STORY 1:
The sad green necklace floated in the sky and made it rain on the city. A helpful rabbit (wearing a green necklace and a striped dress telephoned her friend the Sun who tickled the green necklace and made it stop crying rain. (I think this is missing some details!)

ORANGE ROOM STORY 2:
A person was driving their truck too fast and it was about to go into the ocean. A girl was riding on top of the truck. She was sitting in a rocking chair that had seatbelts! The truck was driving fast to get a way from a mean green snake. Luckily a special multi-colored truck-stopping wall was built just in time to prevent the truck from going into the water. When the truck stopped, the girl in the rocking chair dove into the water and made a big splash.

YELLOW ROOM STORY:
(… getting fuzzy on the details) It was a starry night in the Crystal City and the white kitty who lives on top of the green hill was listening to her music box which was being played by a tall red giant who lived in the nearby scary black mountains. The music came out of the music box in the form of vines which grew lovely red flowers. The yellow moon, shining in the sky, was overtaken by a blob of play-dough which caused it to melt and go away. Fortunately, a pink unicorn driving a rocket ship came to the rescue and made a green monster go away (!). Meanwhile, in the city, a person looked at the stars through a telescope, a white car drove along with its headlights on and kids jumped on a trampoline.

RAINBOW ROOM STORY:
This story begins with a soccer ball on the ground. We wondered who it belonged to and how it got there. Soccer balls do not grow from plants! We didn’t have much time to think about soccer balls when I big blue elephant saw the ball. The elephant wanted to return the ball to its owner so she walked to a house far away in the mountains. The house belonged to a fox who was looking all over for her soccer ball! The elephant knocked and knocked on the door of the house. The fox was so surprised and happy. Later we thought that the soccer ball might really be an egg which hatched and made a mother bird very happy too.

SPANISH ROOM STORY:
A large red truck drives away from a Crystal City which is next to a big blue ocean. Everywhere else is beach and small mountains. This story takes place at night. We know this because we can see a crescent moon and twinkling stars in the dark blue sky. The truck rumbles past a flower meadow filled with red, pink, blue, purple, yellow and most of all, green tulips. The strange pastoral scene gets more strange and scary quickly: two giant robots have come down from the mountains and plan to go to the city. An elephant, riding a boat in the ocean is spouting water out of her trunk which makes the ocean bigger and it starts to flood the beach. There are three dogs driving the red truck but it can’t climb thew steep mountain slopes. Fortunately, three butterflies attached by strings to the truck pull it up the mountains. There is talk of a mysterious drain opening up in the ocean and it’s unclear what effect this will have on the tenuous developing situation. Fortunately, the colorful flowers use their colors to make ice cream cones for the robots. The End.
